Bard Prison Initiative defeats Harvard in debate

HARLEMVILLE, NY—The debate team from Bard Prison Initiative (BPI) recently defeated Harvard’s top-ranked team in a debate held at Eastern Correctional Facility in New York. Hawthorne Valley Association’s (HVA) Board of Trustees President Ellen Condliffe Lagemann serves as the Distinguished Fellow at BPI.

“We wish to congratulate Ellen, her colleagues at Bard, and, especially, the students themselves for their remarkable work in the program that led to the team’s thoughtful presentation at the debate,” said Martin Ping, Executive Director at HVA. “BPI has been a pioneer in bringing reform to our justice system through providing inmates with access to rigorous secondary education, and they are to be commended for their years of service to the many men and women who pass through the New York State correctional system.”
